Electrostatic collection

How electric forces move fog droplets onto a surface where water can be collected.

How it works

Electrostatic fog collection uses electricity to draw tiny water droplets onto a collecting surface.

In the laboratory approach reported by Damak & Varanasi (2018), an ion emitter gives the fog droplets an electric charge. An electric field draws them onto a metal mesh, where they merge into larger drops and drain into a container.

Water collection and clearer air are separate outcomes. FogLab will test the optical effect by comparing the same collector with its power on and off.

Questions worth measuring

  • What is gained over the identical passive collector?
  • How does collection vary with droplet size and flow?
  • What is the complete electrical and pressure-drop cost?

The records below are a starting point for those questions. Read the original methods and results before applying a finding outside the tested setting.
